  • Tate Eskew and Drew Rydberg – Space 1999

    Space: 1999

    Space: 1999

When I moved to Nashville back in 2003, I was fresh off of a nervous breakdown and nearly quit recording and playing music altogether. Luckily I met Drew Rydberg through the TapeOP Messageboard. Drew is a wonderful person and like me, loved approaching music as an experimental medium. There was never any pressure to do any one thing when we would get together and more times than not, we would write and record the song in one afternoon. Although we only had one summer recording songs together (Drew moved on to sound design opportunities in California), it produced 15 songs that range from very traditional songs to pure noise making with circuit bent instruments. It was relaxing, artistically engaging and more than anything, fun.

I plan on posting some of these songs here on the site when I feel the need to let one go into the wild. The song below is a song we recorded during that summer. The song started out as a traditional song, but we soon added a bunch of found audio from a Space: 1999 comic that had come with a 45 record. We aren’t sure where that version is! We do still have the music bed that we recorded and that is what you hear here. I’m sorry about the quality, but Drew and I only had CDs of the various mixes and it turns out my CD was destroyed and Drew’s was scratched. With that said, some of the songs are “final mixes” and you can hear the disc skipping a bit during the song, but at times it almost sounds intentional. Enjoy.

Philip Glass Portrait by Chuck Close

Philip Glass Portrait by Chuck Close

There aren’t too many times in my life where I’ve felt completely overwhelmed and engulfed by a live music environment. When those times hit and the goosebumps don’t go away, I remember why I started playing music in the first place. A couple of years ago my wife, Amy, got us tickets to see Philip Glass: A Retrospective to celebrate his 70th birthday at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center here in Nashville. We were very excited to see a group of musicians play some Philip Glass music. When we arrived at the symphony hall, we had no idea what was in store for us. It turns out that it wasn’t just a “group of musicians” that were to play, but Philip himself and his original ensemble. I can’t explain the feelings that coursed through me that night as I swam inside of every detail. I felt nervous, full of anxiety, incredibly happy and incredibly sad as I was lulled in and out of twisting arpeggios. You don’t so much listen to Philip and his ensemble as you perhaps live inside of their cacophony of life. It was one of my favorite experiences that I’ve encountered in my life. Period.

I’m sure there will be more posts about Philip and his music here on my site, but this is the first. Thanks Philip for all of the inspiration and thank you Amy for giving me the experience.

Also, be sure to check out Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts. You can stream it on Netflix if you so desire.

Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You

Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You

I often post songs from this album on different sites around the interwebs and it’s only to spread the gospel of Unwound. Sometimes a band or artist just has an amazing effect on you and this is one of those bands for me. Unwound released a number of albums that I love, but their last album, Leaves Turn Inside You, is somewhat of a masterpiece in my mind. It’s full of great songs, great playing, atmosphere, ghosts and heart. I hope everyone discovers this album in their journey through life. It’s hard to believe this album was released 9 years ago already. Sara, Vern and Justin…if you are listening, thanks and come to Tennessee and I’ll record another album with you.

Below is a track from Unwound’s last album, Leaves Turn Inside You

zero art studio final floor plan

Well, I think this is the final floor plan that will be built starting around the first of the year. I’m still waiting on a few quotes for different parts of the construction, but I have a decent idea of what it will all cost. As you can see, I’ve changed the layout of the staircase and substituted a spiral staircase for the wide staircase at the rear of the control room. This provides 4 extra feet of space directly behind the console. You can see the previous design here.

    The new (final) design:
